Description
I have a long stairway from my live-in basement to the first floor, and all the framework and carriage are nicely stained and varnished, but someone painted the plank treads a cream (ugh) color. I would like to put in some hardwood planks, but I don't know if they would be expensive, or where I can find them, or how to finish them. Can you help? Sure can. You can buy planks of fir or pine (hardwoods are too expensive), and stain them to match the rest of the stairway. Then apply three coats of an oil-based polyurethane varnish. It might be a good idea to remove those cream-colored planks, although if you refinish them you would not have to buy new ones. And if you really like the idea of hardwood, you can buy treads, hard pine or oak, which are 1 inch thick and the exact width of tread. Although hard pine is not hardwood (oak is), it will look very good varnished or stained and varnished.
